The sources said the porpoises, trained at the Navy Undersea Research and Development Center in San Diego, Calif., left Vietnam last November, possibly to return to San Diego. The six porpoises and their dozen trainers had the job while in Vietnam of guarding the harbor of the Cam Ranh Bay air base from Communist frogmen. Weapons were attached to their snouts and on several occasions they killed underwater guerrillas, the sources said. Although their presence was open knowledge throughout the country, the Navy stamped "top secret" on the project and refused to answer almost all questions about the porpoises. A Navy spokesman issued a brief communique Saturday saying only: "The collection of research data scheduled for the Republic of Vietnam concerning surveillance capabilities of porpoises have been withdrawn. Further details are not available." The sources said the porpoises, while in Vietnam, were taken out into the harbor at Cam Ranh Bay each day in a special boat and set loose. They said sailors in the boat used a radio transmitter-receiver system to order the porpoises to patrol different areas of the harbor or to bring them back to the boat. The sources said an assortment of different weapons, one resembling a switchblade, were attached to the snouts of the porpoises. On seeing a swimmer they signalled their trainers and, if given the okay, then went in and attacked. The sources said there were "several proven cases" of porpoises killing underwater guerrillas at Cam Ranh Bay, but they declined to give any details. Communist frogmen managed to blow up any ships at Cam Ranh Bay while the porpoises were on duty although they hit vessels in all of Vietnam's other major ports. Frogmen Combat 3/22/72 Navy Tried to Drill Dogs In Underwater Warfare NORFOLK—The Navy, after repeated queries, Tuesday said that it was attempting until last fall to teach dogs to swim underwater to detect and possibly kill enemy frogmen. Project Aquadog, as the study was called, was terminated in September after the Navy evaluated its findings and declared the program unfeasible, an Atlantic Fleet spokesman said. Most of the research was carried out at Panama City, Fla., with the help of personnel from Seal Team 2 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. The project was so hush-hush that the Navy denied its existence and refused to answer queries from newsmen. Lt. Mike Sherman in the Navy's Washington information office said March 3 that the service "has traditionally used dogs for sentry and guard duty. It has experimented with them in a number of ways to capitalize on their special attributes." Not hinting that Project Aquadog had existed until September, Sherman added that "we are not studying the use of dogs swimming underwater." An Atlantic Fleet spokesman said that the project was designed to provide "a new technique for inshore undersea warfare forces concerned with swimmer defense." He acknowledged that the dogs were being taught to detect enemy frogmen. The spokesman said that results of the study were not substantial and further evaluation of the program was not considered necessary. Sam Steiger said last week. The Arizona Republican said the House Select Committee on Crime hearings also will deal with the Emprise Corp., which has financial interests including stock in more than 30 race tracks across the country. Steiger has been charging on the House floor for two years that Emprise has Cosa Nostra ties. Steiger said the hearings will start May 9 with testimony on alleged organized crime financial interests in the Hazel Park Race Track near Detroit, Jefferson Downs in New Orleans, race tracks in New England, upstate New York, and "a situation in New Jersey." He said witnesses will include law enforcement officers and officials of the race tracks. "These hearings will put the spotlight on the fact that organized crime has an extensive investment in sports, all of which involve potential gambling," Steiger said. He said its infiltration into professional sports "is more dangerous than into other legitimate businesses" because of the potential for fixing sporting events. Chairman Claude Pepper, D-Fla., has said the hearings will go into other major sports after horse racing and deal with direct organized crime involvement in "ownership and management of teams, arenas, and concessions" as well as fixing of sporting events. The hearings were tentatively planned to begin last week but a committee source said they were delayed for a trial in Los Angeles that ended last Wednesday with conviction of Emprise and six persons of conspiracy to hide out-of-state gambling interests in a Las Vegas hotel and casino. They included Anthony J. Zerelli, a major stock holder and director of the Hazel Park Racing Association and identified by the Justice Department in 1967 as a Detroit-organized crime leader, and Michael S. The U.S. Command, after nearly 24 hours delay, announced Tuesday that two Americans were killed and 16 injured in incidents Sunday and Monday involving guided-missile frigate Worden in the Gulf of Tonkin and the guided-missile destroyer Buchanan off North Vietnam. The command said one sailor was killed and seven injured aboard the Buchanan by a shell from an enemy shore battery. The ship suffered damage to its superstructure. The other incident was an explosion aboard the Worden which killed one sailor and wounded nine. Robert A. Sterling, 23, has been identified as the victim on the Worden. The Buchanan's victim has not been made known. The U.S. Command, pressed with queries from newsmen, was reported to have put pressure on Adm. Bernard A. Clarey, commander of the Pacific Fleet, to give it a report on the Worden incident. A command statement later gave scant details, saying only: "The exact cause of the explosion has not been determined. Preliminary reports indicate the Worden was beyond range of enemy shore batteries. We do not know whether fire from enemy vessels may have been involved. We have no further details at this time." While sources at the Pentagon said the Worden apparently was attacked by a high-speed North Vietnamese patrol boat, there was speculation in Saigon that it may have been hit by a missile or shell fired from another 7th Fleet ship or from an American jet fighter-bomber. In a 1964 Tonkin Gulf incident two U.S. destroyers allegedly were attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats. The details of the incident have long been a matter of controversy. It was used by former President Lyndon B. Johnson as justification for retaliatory air strikes against North Vietnam. Here...is, in a nutshell...the utter foolishness of the U.S. Government and its agencies. Note that I wrote Nixon January 20...warning in advance...that our ships would be attacked off Viet Nam. (The only other time it happened there...I warned Pres. Johnson on Wednesday, and the torpedo boats struck at our carriers on Friday.) Now, it isn't just the fact that it happened, that is significant. What is important...is that if I were taken seriously...experts might have pondered what on earth could cause such a thing to happen. Remember that at that time the present crisis was not happening there. So the experts might have been able to project...what is happening now...and we'd (U.S.) be way ahead of the game. Or, they simply might have asked me. But they didn't. Shortly after this phone call to warn of this attack on our warships...I tried to call again...when Nixon went to China...because I had some red hot info for the U.S. Government. This time I was rudely brushed off, in Norfolk, by the Secret Service girl operator. So the S1's informed me to not help, or try to help, the U.S. govt. any further...no matter what.
