# Witch Doctor Offers Aid
To British Soccer Team

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 1 (UPI)—England need worry
no more about qualifying or even winning the soccer
World Cup next year. A Kenyan witch doctor has written
to the national team manager, Sir Alf Ramsey, to offer
his services to ensure victory.

Sharriff Omar Abubakr describes himself as one of
East Africa's leading witch doctors and this week wrote
to the manager.

"Dear Sir Ramsey, I understand that England is anx-
ious to win back the World Cup in Munich and that the
chances of this aim are rather slim. I am interested in
signing a one to two-year contract with you with a view
to improving England's chances...."

England won the World Cup winner in 1966, still has a tough
qualifying match in October, against Poland, which must
be won to ensure a place in the last 16 finalists.

Abubakr, currently guiding the fortune of Kenya's most
successful club side, The Breweries, described how his
powers work.

"I forecast the result of a game and then make it
happen. The first step is to fast. I abstain from sex and
recite prayers from the Koran.

"During the game, when an opposing player gets the
ball, I often make him see double or even turn the ball
into a snake. If the opposing player gets near the goal,
I can make the ball go wide of target or if my players
begin to get tired I can make them full of life again," he
said.

Abubakr said he wanted to turn his powers to the
international field.

"If I have no luck with Sir Alf, I shall try to sign up
with a club in Germany."

Many East African soccer clubs use the services of
witch doctors but the Kenyan Football Association recently
began a campaign to expel them from the coaches'
benches.

"Although it is difficult to legislate against the prac-
tice," said the association secretary, Ian Situma, "We
are alive to the problem and intend to take every step
to stamp it out."

"Players should be encouraged to train hard if they
want to succeed instead of relying on witchcraft—which
does not help at all."

Most club officials and witch doctors themselves do
not agree on that statement.

Major teams for years have purchased the talents of
medicine men to cast spells on their opponents. Recently,
however, one match had to be abandoned because the
22 players became involved in a brawl over a witch
doctor.

Several players were disciplined and the football as-
sociation of Kenya began a campaign to discourage the
use of witch doctors.

Witch doctors such as Sharriff Omar Abubakr often
become wealthy as a result of their work in soccer and
some find their services are much sought after.
