Incredible as it may seem...

in the short space of a matter of weeks..........

I have beaten the Baltimore Bullets in the NBA playoffs...with my mind.

I have beaten the Virginia Squires in the ABA playoffs...with my mind.

And I gave the astronauts "fits" in outer space...with my mind.

In each and every case...I notified you in advance, in writing, that I would do these things.

# Amorous Turtles Bite Skin Divers

"Why hasn't this 'little error' happened before, eh?"

KEY LARGO, Fla. (IP) -- Two skin divers who say they were attacked by giant loggerhead turtles on offshore coral reefs may just have been mistaken for female turtles by lovestruck, nearsighted males, a turtle expert says.

"I have never heard of an unprovoked attack on a human in 30 years of studying turtles," said Dr. Archie Carr of the University of Florida, a man whose work on turtles has made him internationally famous among scientists and laymen alike.

Loggerhead turtles are an ocean-going species which can weigh as much as 500 pounds.

MARJORIE MANSER suffered severe lacerations on her thigh when bitten by a loggerhead while diving for a lost anchor at Black Rocks April 25.

Jim King overpowered a 250-pound loggerhead he said attacked him as he was diving on Conch Reef Wednesday. King managed to turn the turtle over on its back and drag it back to his boat. He was not injured.

King and Mrs. Manser are Key Largo residents who have dived the Atlantic reefs for many years. Both said they had encountered turtles at sea many times and never before considered them aggressive.

CARR SAID loggerheads were nearsighted enough they could mistake humans and even floating debris for a female turtle during the breeding season.

William Hill, a U.S. Parks Department Ranger who lives on Key Largo, said an estimated 300 loggerheads live in the area. Most of them nest on Florida Bay on the west side of the Florida Keys, he said, and many cruise the offshore reefs in their hunt for food.

Carr said male turtles nip the females with their beaks during courtship, "and what would just be a love-bite to a female turtle could result in horrendous injuries to a human being."

# Millions of mice ravage Australia

Millions of mice have devastated hundreds of square miles of Australian wheat fields and a government spokesman said farmers in Queensland were powerless to stop them.

The plague is the worst in Queensland's history. Farmers in the Darling Downs area 100 miles west of Brisbane report damage at $3.6 million.

Desperate methods of trying to control the vermin were reported. Shopkeeper John Coss of Wandoan said he wired all the shelves of his shop with low-voltage electric current and reported killing up to 10,000 mice in a day, but still they come.

A Darling Downs farmer rigged up a line of bottles on the edge of a water trough. As the mice ran up the bottles to eat the cheese he put on top, the bottles tipped over into the water. The farmer said the drownings were running about 70 mice a day.

TO MY SIX SCIENTISTS... I refer you to a letter I sent you some time ago, this year... wherein I told you that I would activate UFO's in position around our earth... to issue forth SOUNDS which would make insects, birds, fish, etc., on earth DO UNUSUAL THINGS.

And in another letter I warned you that Nature had turned its hand against human beings... and would attack human beings now... using all its natural forces.

These two newsclippings underscore what I told you.

As a matter of interest... I asked one of you to get me to Australia... and I could save the Australians from the ravaging attack of the millions of mice. I received not even an answer. So I have let the matter go to its natural ultimate conclusion.

You must bear in mind... that in my opinion (and I am in an excellent position to know, absolutely) stopping the onslaught of millions of mice... would be childs play for me. (I found out what I could do when I stopped or diverted the volcanic slides. Plus some other major miracles. So... I do indeed know what I can do.)

# Congressional Probe Seeks Ties Between Crime, Sports

4/30/72

WASHINGTON (AP)--Alleged organized crime ties with race tracks in Detroit, New Orleans, and the Northeast will be leadoff targets of a House probe next month on infiltration of criminal elements into professional sports, Rep. Sam Steiger said last week.

The Arizona Republican said the House Select Committee on Crime hearings also will deal with the Emprise Corp., which has financial sports interests including stock in more than 30 race tracks across the country. Steiger has been charging on the House Floor for two years that Emprise has Cosa Nostra ties.

Steiger said the hearings will start May 9 with testimony on alleged organized crime financial interests in the Hazel Park Race Track near Detroit, Jefferson Downs in New Orleans, race tracks in New England, upstate New York, and "a situation in New Jersey."

He said witnesses will include law enforcement officers and officials of the race tracks.

"These hearings will put the spotlight on the fact that organized crime has an extensive investment in sports, all of which involve potential gambling," Steiger said.

He said its infiltration into professional sports "is more dangerous than into other legitimate businesses" because of the potential for fixing sporting events.

Chairman Claude Pepper, D-Fla., has said the hearings will go into other major sports after horse racing (and deal with direct organized crime involvement in "ownership and management of teams, arenas, and concessions" as well as fixing of sporting events.)

The hearings were tentatively planned to begin last week but a committee source said they were delayed for a trial in Los Angeles that ended last Wednesday with conviction of Emprise and six persons of conspiracy to hide out-of-state gambling interests in a Las Vegas hotel and casino.

They included Anthony J. Zerelli, a major stock holder and director of the Hazel Park Racing Association and identified by the Justice Department in 1967 as a Detroit-organized crime leader, and Michael S. Polizzi also identified by the Justice Department as a Detroit-organized crime leader. Steiger has told the House that Emprise holds stock in both Hazel Park and Jefferson Downs.

But Jerry M. Jacobs, president of Emprise headquartered in Buffalo, N.Y., issued a statement saying he was sure the Los Angeles conviction will be reversed on appeal, and saying the verdict was against the old Emprise co-founded by his father, not the new Emprise reorganized by himself.

Emprise also owns Sportservice, which operates concessions in stadiums and theaters nationwide: several sports stadiums, and bowling alleys, and restaurants.

Jacobs also owns the Cincinnati Royals Basketball team.

CONTACTS..........

no doubt when I told you why my PK attack on 14 teams failed to stop the Cowboys... namely, because of three key games deliberately "thrown" by two QB's and one coach... you thought I was just alibiing. Well, I was not. I knew for a fact... through my powerful ESP brain... that Mafia-Syndicate hoods were at work manipulating these pro football games. This clipping in yesterday's paper... indicates that now powers-that-be in the government... are beginning to also realize this fact!

# Witnesses Listed In Probe

5/9/72

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Six alleged Mafia figures plus horse-racing officials and entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. were announced Monday among witnesses for a House probe into organized crime infiltration of professional sports.

Davis's testimony will be on criminals' "effort to use him" at a racetrack in New Jersey where the singer owns a stable, said Chairman Claude Pepper, D-Fla., of the House Select Committee on Crime.

Pepper and the committee's chief counsel, Joseph A. Phillips, said the hearings will start Tuesday on alleged race-fixing and organized-crime ties with 16 racetracks across the country and then go into baseball, football, basketball, and hockey.

Phillips said committee investigators concluded there have been instances of race fixing "at practically every track on the Eastern seaboard and many in the West."

He said the investigators are still looking into a number of professional football and basketball teams.

Some players will be called, Phillips said. He said the committee will go into two instances of football players being approached to fix games but reporting the approaches to authorities.

The committee will touch also on "reports of alleged bribes" of public officials.

Pepper emphasized the committee would only hear testimony on the reports and would not prejudge the charges against any officials where trial is pending.

President Nixon

I am a member of Mensa. Dr. Hynek, Dr. Sprinkle, and Dr. Max Fogel...all know me. These are well-known scientists. Also, am generally recognized as one of the world's greatest psychics, by experts. (See Brad Steiger's book, "What The Seers Predict For 1972".)

Last Saturday, at 4 PM, the UFO intelligences with which I carry on a two-way communication...contacted me, and gave to me the complete answer to the world's nuclear question. They told me exactly how...to place into action a plan...which will make it impossible...for Russia (or any other country) to attack America with nuclear weapons. Further, the plan would make America and Russia close friends...having no fear of each other forevermore.

In short...the people of the world could breathe easy for a change...knowing that nuclear war...could not happen.

I had hoped in the past that the UFO intelligences would eventually give me an answer to the question of what causes cancer, and how to prevent it. But...this ingenious plan which they have just given me...is even better...since it can save hundreds of millions of lives. And...it is foolproof.

They told me...to discuss the plan...only with you yourself. Absolutely no intermediaries. I am to do the same with the Russian heads of government.

I will wait to hear from you on this ten days, then am instructed by the UFO creatures to contact the Russians and offer them the plan. This, incidentally, should the Russians follow through...will not be any setback to America. There is nothing in the plan...to give America or Russia an edge over the other. But if either country (or both) accepts the plan...there can never be a nuclear war. And America can never be conquered or enslaved. And Russia will no longer consider us a threat to them; nor will we consider Russia a threat to us.

If this plan by the UFO creatures is ignored...as has been all else I've put forth, by this government...then the War to end all Wars will lie just before us in time, time ahead, and hundreds of millions will die a horrible death.

TO MY SIX SCIENTISTS...

Am now embarking...on a fascinating project. One which I believe will delight you, as far as research into psi-force phenomena goes...and one easily checkable.

Before going any further...let me stress...that I do not intend to harm anyone at all.

Now...I am going to use some of the 150-odd different mechanisms (of which PK is only one) to strike the Cleveland-Akron, Ohio, area, with psi-force directed by my mind...and cause...effects there. Here is what to look for...in time ahead...

Power blackouts there...big ones.
More than the usual number of fires.
All kinds of electrical disturbances.
Lightning storms...with lightning striking many places there.
Planes being forced down; power failure, etc.
Ships sinking just offshore.
Blazing hot drought.
The people in the area...behaving peculiarly (more so than usual, that is).
Odd animal behavior (dogs, cats, etc.)
Possible epidemics.
60-90 mile-per-hour winds.

Am doing this for a reason, and have cleared it with my Si's. I was badly treated during my last ten days visit there...by some people...and I think, and the Si's concur...that it would be most appropros...to demonstrate to the people of that area...that I am quite real, and that my connection with the UFO's is quite real. That my "claims" of documented miracles...are not empty claims. In short, the people there need to be taught a lesson...as only PK Men can teach a lesson.

Now note: any persons there who were friendly to me, and helped me during my visit...like Mike Reineri, of WIXY radio, Alan Douglas, TV Show; Clive Thomas radio show...and so on...they know who they are...these people will not be affected while my PK attack is going on. Also, the people who wear my disc...will not be affected, either.

Am setting up this psi-force attack mechanism now, today...and the power will begin to build in as days go by...and I assure you that you will see some mighty interesting things happen...in the Cleveland-Akron area!

# Power failure renews tie-in

A power failure affecting 35,000 Municipal Light customers in the city during the night could have been prevented by a Municipal Plant-Illuminating Co. closed switch tie-in, according to Warren D. Hinchee, city commissioner of light and power.

"Under such a connection we could establish adequate backup systems to prevent trouble from becoming too widespread and prevent an interruption of service to our customers," Hinchee said today.

The power outages occurred at 10 p. m. in Collinwood, the near West Side and downtown areas. It was Municipal Light's second breakdown yesterday. Power was finally restored at 3:22 a. m. to customers affected in the second outage.

SERVICE WAS interrupted for nearly three hours at 5 a. m. yesterday when a blade broke on a fan that cools one of the boilers at the plant.

Last night's outage was caused by the failure of a cable terminator, known as a pothead, which was providing electrical power produced by two gas turbine generators at the W. 41st St. substation, Hinchee said.

The generators had been put into service during the first power failures yesterday. Their failure caused an overload which resulted in the blackout. Partial service was restored within an hour.

POLICE AT THE SIXTH District Station at E. 66th St. and Utopia Ave., reported that the blackout left electrically run doors in the building to be inoperative.

In the Second District Station, Fulton Rd. and Trowbridge Ave., police were using flashlights and lanterns during the outage. Radio communication was not interrupted because the station's batteries were used.

# Vepco Chants For Rain Wash

NORFOLK--"What we need is a good hard rain," said E. C. Baker Jr., area manager for Virginia Electric & Power Co.

That--"rain and plenty of it"--is what it's going to take to rid power lines and equipment of salt deposits that have accumulated the last few days, causing scattered power failures throughout the area, the Vepco official said.

The deposits, brought inland by strong northeast winds, have coated insulators and switching equipment. Bright flashes accompanied the power failures. Baker said Monday that crews have been working 12-hour shifts in an attempt to wash the deposits from equipment. Crews from Richmond, Williamsburg, and Roanoke Rapids were also called into service.

To prevent electrocution, the crewmen utilize equipment emitting a fine nonconducting spray mist onto the high-voltage lines.

In addition, various fire departments have lent assistance.

"But the salt is still floating around in the atmosphere and reforming in some places," Baker said.

He said there has been power trouble "practically everywhere" except in the downtown areas of the city.

All power was lost about 2:30 a. m. Monday in Virginia Beach, Baker said, adding that power was restored in about 15 minutes.

There were "wide-spread outings" in Bayside, Oceana, Fentress, and the Kempsville-Providence areas, he said.

The longest reported power failure was in the Bayside area, where a burned line rendered residents powerless for about four hours.

Told that The Virginian-Pilot had received reports of power failures up to 12 hours, Baker replied, "Those must be isolated incidents. We haven't received such reports."

Baker said that the public, for the most part, have been "cooperative and understanding" during the situation.

"Of course, we've had some people who haven't been so understanding," he added.

Virginian Pilot Tue May 30, 1972

TO MY SIX SCIENTISTS..........while in Cleveland, Ohio, last week, I was ridiculed on a radio show (people phoning in after my appearance on the show), then again a couple of nights later I was insulted on another radio show, Pete Franklin show, and walked off the program, sizzling mad. Now, I had discussed my hitting the Cleveland area with PK to teach it a lesson...after the Clive Thomas show. When the Pete Franklin incident happened...I was madder than anything. The very next morning after the Pete Franklin show...there was a huge POWER BLACKOUT in the downtown Cleveland area (see above) where I had appeared on radio the night before. I returned to Cape Charles, Virginia, yesterday, Monday, at 1:30 PM in the aft. Shortly thereafter Norfolk, nearby, was hit by POWER BLACKOUTS. There is no doubt whatsoever that my special brain has become so powerful...its power increasing exponentially...that strong emotion on my part, is causing effect...did, in fact, cause these power blackouts (though they are always blamed on some mechanical breakdown that people can understand.) I told this over the radio while in Cleveland, on the Mike Reineri WIXY radio show, after the Cleveland blackout...that I suspected I had been the cause of the Cleveland blackout. Then, when I returned home to Virginia...and a portion of Norfolk nearby blacked out...I knew it for sure.

# The Hex Is Off Squires

Virginian-Pilot Staff Story

The Squires have been pardoned. Ted Owens, the PK Man from Cape Charles, notified the Virginian-Pilot in a letter to sports writer Frank Vehorn that he is now "leaving the Squires alone."

In a column last week Vehorn related how Owens had hexed the Squires and caused them to lose to New York in their American Basketball Association playoff series.

With the Squires leading the series, 3-2, Owens became upset when the Squires used a rival "whammy expert" and indicated Owens' physic powers were not worth employing because they were intangible.

Owens said he was going "one-on-one" against the Squires and the Great Kahuna and the Nets won the next two games and the series. The Squires made only 37 per cent of their shots the last game and scored only 88 points, lowest in two years.

Owens said the public disclosure of his accomplishment "has saved the Squires a fate worse than death. . . . I had determined to give the Virginia Squires the 'Philadelphia Eagles' full treatment . . . which would have extended from one to three years of PK attacks."

But now, Owens says, "I will leave them alone. We are quits. I've made my point and you (Vehorn) have put the point on record. Now that they know who the powerhouse psychic is in this area, they are welcome from now on to use any psychic they wish, I do not care . . . as long as my powers are not challenged by anyone in public position. And I wish them (the Squires) the best of luck from now on."

For the Squires, now re-assembling their forces for next season, there hardly could be better news.

Dear Mr. Owens,

I thank you both for your letter and your gracious attitude toward the Squires.

There certainly was no need for you to have been concerned that I would have taken you to task for what you did to the Squires in the final two playoff games.

I, too, am of the opinion the Squires acted foolishly and certainly if they had researched your career and accomplishment they would not have pressed the point by bringing in the "great kahuna."

So while I was disappointed the Squires could not win, I certainly was able to appreciate your position. The fault belonged to the Squires, not to you.

My regards and best wishes

Mr. Frank Vehorn, Sports Columnist
Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va.

Dear Mr. Vehorn:

Thank you for your personal letter. It is deeply appreciated.

The completely objective attitude, on the part of yourself and the Virginian-Pilot staff...toward my use of psi-force to defeat Norfolk's own team...has given me what amounts to a traumatic shock! Simply, I am not accustomed to encountering intelligence at a high level, encased in objectivity.

Well...

After much reflection, I've figured out...to myself, at least...what is fair.

This season...I personally was responsible for the Squires losing two games, and probably the championship...because they were the hottest team I'd seen, up until I came into the picture.

So next season...I will replace these two games that I took away...just for you, personally. And this is not a publicity stunt. We will keep this completely off the record if you wish. Here is how it will work, if it is your, and your paper's wish, to put my powers behind the Squires for two games.

When the playoffs begin, watch how the Squires are doing. If they get into trouble, get down 2-1, or 3-1...ring me up and tell me the key game you want me to attend. Follow that up with two tickets (I always take my son with me) and $15 for transportation money. (The paper might like to back you up with the tickets and financing.) I'll go to that game (with you, if you like, sitting with Beau and I) and work the other team over...to make them miss, and help the Squires win. Then, if there is a second key game where I might be needed...I'll come running in the same fashion, if you say so.

I do not successfully control every game, always...when I work on pro basketball teams. However...both this season, as well as the season before...I was 100% successful in beating the Baltimore Bullets and the Squires (and off the record, not documented, I beat the Celtics, because of a personal difference with Bill Russell...to show him what I could do.) So for two years...I haven't missed in the games I've worked to control, in pro basketball.

Personally...to me, the Squires are a business, run very badly by their management...otherwise they would never have let Rick Barry, Charlie Scott and Julius Erving (who is fast approaching the genius of Earl the Pearl Monroe...if not there already) get away from them. If they'd hung on to these three...what team in the NBA or ABA could beat them? My guess...none of them could. However, to residents of Norfolk...they attach loyalty to "their" team (forgetting it's the owner's team). So, there are always different viewpoints...perhaps all with some validity.

So, Mr. Vehorn...tell your Virginian-Pilot staff...that strictly as a favor to you, and to them, for your-all fairness...I'll come running to replace those two lost key games next season...should you whistle. If you don't whistle, fine; I'll not sweat it...and all is well.

My regards and best wishes..........

Dave Twardzik Makes It Official

. . . signs contract as Earl Foreman watches

# Twardzik (Finally) Becomes a Squire

By FRANK VEHORN
Virginian-Pilot Sports Writer

NORFOLK -- It took Squires owner Earl Foreman and Dave Twardzik a week to get together and a few minutes Friday to ...

Twardzik, the All-American from Old Dominion University, formally signed his contract with the Squires a week after he had announced his intentions.

"There were no problems," explained Twardzik. "Mr. Foreman is just a very busy man and it was a matter of getting an agreeable time between the two of us."

Twardzik, a 6-1 guard, is believed to have signed a two-year, no-cut contract worth $65,000. He received a $2,500 bonus and the promise of another $2,500 should he make the ABA all-rookie team.

"We are very pleased to have Dave join us," said Foreman. "He will be working with our front office, under Johnny Kerr, this summer."

Twardzik was joined in the signing by ODU coach Sonny Allen. "Dave has a big adjustment to make in the pros," said Allen. "He has to make adjustment on defense and learn to play without the ball.

"At ODU he controlled the ball about 90 per cent of the time for us. But I'm sure he can make whatever adjustments are necessary."

Twardzik was equally as confident, but not overly so.

"Some people may feel I should perform as well in the pros as I did in college," said Twardzik. "But I'm not going to let that affect my game. I've seen some who felt the pressure and I'm just going to play the best I can."

Twardzik said he had been involved in fast-break offense since high school didn't expect many problems adjusting to the Squires' running game. "But there will be some tricks of the trade I'll have to pick up on defense," he noted.

In three varsity seasons at Old Dominion, Twardzik averaged 20.2 points and had a record 880 assists. He also set career records for the most points scored (1660) and most free throws made (548).

Individual season records included most free throws, best free throw percentage (.845) and most assists (332). Individual single game records were most free throws (24), most free throws attempted (26) and most assists (20).

# PK Power Struck Down Squires

The PK Man has struck again.

While most Virginians were fearful of what Rick Barry of John Roche would do to the Squires in the ABA playoff series, they should have been concerned with a fellow named Ted Owens who resides in Cape Charles.

No doubt you have heard of Mr. Owens. By his own count he has brought about 300 miracles, documented by lawyers and scientists, and has 92 per cent accuracy for achieving his avowed missions. He performs these feats, he claims by powers of the brain.

If you were at the Norfolk Sports Club some months ago perhaps you laughed at Owens. Now you, too, must share the blame for the Squires' defeat to New York.

The real blame must belong to the Squires, though. Not only did the Squires spurn the assistance of the PK Man in the playoffs but they angered him by hiring a pretender, "The Great Kahuna," to put a whammy on the Nets.

So while most Squires fans were feeling confident on April 30, what with the Squires holding a 3-2 edge in the series and needing only one game to win, the PK Man set out to change the Squires fortunes.

In a letter to Squires vice president Johnny Keery, Owens typed:

"I am notifying you, on record, that I am going one-on-one with the Squires. My object will be . . . to make the Squires lose the playoffs. I like a challenge. This is a good challenge.

"Your Squires are red-hot and beating the stuffings out of the Nets. Let's see if I and my powers and my UFO intelligences can turn this around and beat the stuffings out of the Squires."

### Great Kahuna Insulted Owens

Owens explained that a member of the Squires' staff had phoned him and wanted him to work for the team. But when Owens requested a fee the matter was dropped and "The Great Kahuna" brought in. "So I had to show what I could do, as a matter of pride," he said.

On May 1 the Nets beat the Squires to even the series at 3-3. Owens wrote to Kerr:

"Tonight I wiped out the Squires. I told you I would. Thursday night (for the deciding seventh game) I will pour my power into . . . to smash the (See Vehorn, Page B6)

George McGinnis scored 30 points Friday night as the Indiana Pacers defeated the New York Nets, 114-108, despite Rick Barry's 44 points, to take a 2-1 lead in their ABA playoff final.

The Pacers, exhorted by coach Bob Leonard between halves to "show some enthusiasm," took the lead for good at 73-71 on Roger Brown's turnaround jumper with 6:52 remaining in the third playing catch-up basketball.

An all-time league playoff record crowd of 15,241 at Nassau Coliseum watched the Pacers post 10-point leads twice in the fourth quarter before Barry managed to whittle the margin with seven straight points.

Barry was a one-man show in the first half as he scored 24 points on 12 field goals. Sporting a 31.5 average for the first two games of this series, Barry netted 12 points in each session before intermission. He hit on five consecutive shots early in the second period to keep New York in the game.

The Pacers, trailing 52-49 with two minutes to go in the first half, scored the last five points on a pair of fouls by McGinnis, a Freddie Lewis free throw and Billy Keller's basket with three seconds left that gave them a 54-52 lead at intermission.

Indiana then began going inside for the good shot and began hitting the open man consistently, while the Nets were less than efficient with their outside shooting.

The Pacers held a 90-84 lead at the end of three periods, were ahead 97-87 with 9:31 to go in the game and pushed their margin to 11 points at 112-101 with two minutes left.

Lewis was Indiana's second high man with 22 points and Roger Brown had 20. Billy Paultz netted 17 points for the Nets before fouling out.

The fourth game of the series will be played here Monday night.

# Mays Idle

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Jerry Grote singled in Cleon Jones with the winning run with one out in the ninth inning Friday night as the Mets celebrated Willie Mays' return to New York with a 2-1 victory over San Francisco Giants.

Grote's hit came after the Mets had loaded the bases against reliever Jerry Johnson on a walk to Jones, a single by Jim Fregosi and an intentional walk to Ed Kranepool.

Mays, purchased from San Francisco on Thursday, watched from the bench despite the pleas of 44,271 fans, the largest crowd to watch a Met game this season. John Milner, greeted by a chorus of boos and a chant of "We want Willie," walked as a pinch hitter in the eighth and moved to second on a sacrifice by Bud Harrelson.

five-run inning and Britton had a 7-0 cushion.

Not only were they beaten on the field, the Tides may have lost a catcher for a few days. Billy Cotton was hit on the same finger he had damaged in spring training and left the game in the second inning.

"I thought at first I'd really had it," Cotton said. "Now it doesn't seem so bad."

The Whips scored their eighth run in the fourth and Red Canada socked a two-run homerun in the fifth. That made the score 10-2 and so it stayed until the ninth.

DON HAHN now is officially the player the Mets are sending to Tidewater as a replacement for Charlie Williams. . . . Hahn may arrive in time to take over in centerfield again tonight. Jim Gosger will move to left, giving the Tides a set outfield for the first time. . . . Hahn will pick up a .400 average. He was 2-for-5 in the first two games of the season, before being summoned to New York as a replacement for Mike Jorgensen. . . . Still no word on what the Mets will do with Bill Sudakis, the former Dodger now working out with the club.

SCOTT REID has a weekend military drill so the Tides had only 21 men in uniform Friday. No decision has been made on which Memphis pitcher will be brought up to replace Williams or whether an outfielder is headed for that double-A club. But Fritz would be the possibility. . . . Ron Brand, hit in the face by a pitch from Tommy Moore Thursday night, may be out two or three weeks.

THE TIDES are last in the league in batting with a .229 average according to latest figures. . . . They also are tied for sixth in fielding. . . . George Theodore continues to lead in RBI with 23.

# Vehorn Continued

Squires and hand the win to the Nets. PS-Where was the Great Kahuna tonight . . . With his Whammy?"

Owens pointed out that one Net, John Roche, said none of the Nets had played well until the sixth game. "This was because I'd been loyal to the Squires," explained Owens. "But because of their rejection of my offer to help them on a professional basis, I switched teams."

For the sixth game Owens had worked his powers by television. The seventh game, though, he came to Scope and watched as the Great Kahuna put a tripple whammy on the Nets.

But Owens and the Nets prevailed. The Squires were held to their lowest output, 88 points, in two years and shot only 37 per cent from the floor. "How do you figure it. . . the shots we were taking we usually make. This time we were off just a little bit," said guard Bernie Williams. Fatty Taylor called it the worst shooting night by the Squires ever.

## Nobody Laughing at PK Now

So the triumphant PK Man wrote again to Kerr: "You can tell your "Great Kahuna" he made a geniune ass out of himself. Someone should tell that poor soul that a turban and oriental dress is not worn by a 'kahuna'. The kahunas were famous witch-doctor types in the Pacific. Anyway, your Kahuna wouldn't have looked any sillier in a grass skirt. . . than he did in his turban and oriental getup.

"Well, to sum it up. . . you boys saved a thousand by not hiring the PK Man. It only cost you the championship. Was it worth it? I took no pleasure in beating the Squires with my mind, just for your knowledge. It was simply. . . a job I had to do. . . to show Foreman and Company how potent intangibles can be. As a former part owner of the Eagles he (Foreman) should know."

And for the members of the Sports Club, the PK Man had this message:

"I seriously doubt if you were laughing when the Squires sank to the bottom, scuttled by the man you laughed at. It is barely possible, though not probable, that it might teach the jokers and cut-ups among the members some manners."

And, hopefully, the Squires have learned that the Kahuna is no match for the PK Man. It's a lesson the Eagles, Colts and Bullets and others had learned previously.

Maybe the PK Man will forgive before the next season.

If Mays was happy, then so were his new teammates. They all chatted animatedly with the 41-year-old superstar acquired in a trade with San Francisco Thursday.

"You were my hero when I was younger," said coach Joe Pignatano, pointing a bat at Mays and laughing. "My father used to take me to see you play."

Mays' eyes lit up and he broke into a wide grin.
